US under Trump Series: Trump to announce further details on ‘Comey tape’ later this week

After US President Donald Trump fired the FBI director James Comey in May, he tweeted a warning to the director against leaking information to the press. The tweet said "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” There had been much speculation in the media bout the tapes’ existence with some calling it a bluff. In response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by The Wall Street Journal back in May, the secret service said that it does not have any audio copies of transcripts of conversations from inside the White House.

U.S. lawmakers have also called for Trump to say whether such tapes exist and if so, to release them as part of ongoing investigations. Earlier this month, James Comey testified before Senate Intelligence Committee and in response to a question he said, “Lordy, I hope there are tapes”. Despite warnings, Comey released a memo of his conversations with the President to the press via a friend. He admitted this at the hearing, after which Trump tweeted about the legality of his leak and called him a 'leaker'.

In response to questions, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that the President has said that he will make an announcement on this and expected this week.
