US under Trump Series: President Trump fires FBI director James Comey

US President Donald Trump has fired the director of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) James Comey; a move that came too suddenly but not too surprisingly. This is the first time a President has fired that FBI director since President Clinton fired the then FBI director William Sessions. The Presidents usually stay away from taking such a path as it almost always triggers controversy. FBI directors are usually appointed for 14-year terms so that politics play little or no role in their decision.

Given the recent controversies surrounding the Federal Bureau of Investigation under the leadership of James Comey, the decision does not look very surprising. Director Comey was alleged of the mishandling of the Clinton email scandal investigation. He is also accused by the Democrats that he influenced the election in favor of Donald Trump by announcing the re-opening of the Clinton email case just days before the election. However, he resolved the issue before the election took place.

President Trump has yet not given out any particular reason for this decision. However, it is widely believed that it was done to give the institution a fresh new start whose reputation soared under the Director’s supervision. It is believed that the President acted on clear recommendations from both the attorney general Jeff Sessions and his deputy attorney general.

This firing is likely to become a grand issue in American politics, both among democrats and in the media.
