US under Trump Series: Former FBI director selected to lead as special prosecutor in Russia case

Former FBI director Robert Mueller has been selected to lead the investigations into Russia’s meddling with the US election and alleged possible collusion of some of the Trump campaign members with Russian officials. The critics of President Trump and the Democrats have long been howling for a special independent prosecutor and that call was answered by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein with the appointment of Mr. Mueller. In a statement released by the US Justice Department, Mr. Rosenstein said, “Based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command……….I am confident that he will follow the facts, apply the law and reach a just result.”

Mr. Mueller became the FBI director back in 2001 and served under both the Bush administration and the Obama administration and he is the only FBI director other than J. Edgar Hoover to serve more than 10 years. In 2011, his tenure was extended by two years as he was described as the gold standard in FBI by the then President Barrack Obama.

While many cheered the decision in Capitol Hill; both democrats and Republican, others like the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Jason Chaffetz felt there was no need for a special prosecutor as no evidence has surfaced to suggest real collusion so far.
