US under Trump Series: First resignation in Trump’s team

Yesterday, we discussed the crisis in President Donald Trump’s administration, in his cabinet, to be specific. President Donald Trump’s pick for National Security Advisor, retired United States Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn illegally discussed removal of sanctions on Russia, with the Russian ambassador Sergei Kisilyak and at the same time the Obama administration was imposing additional sanctions on Russia. Initially, he denied the allegations and Vice President Mike Pence came out in the media backing him. But later it became clear that he did discuss sanctions, which was illegal. This was a great embarrassment for the Trump administration as the media started discussing whether Vice President knowingly defended him or not.

There was little options left for the administration but to dump him. And exactly that is what happened. Mr. Flynn resigned. The first resignation under Trump administration for illegal conducts. In his resignation letter he defended his call by saying, “In the course of my duties as the incoming national security advisor, I held numerous phone calls with foreign counterparts, ministers, and ambassadors…….These calls were to facilitate a smooth transition and begin to build the necessary relationships between the president, his advisors and foreign leaders. Such calls are standard practice in any transition of this magnitude.”

He also cleared Vice resident Pence by saying in the letter, “Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the vice president elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the president and the vice president, and they have accepted my apology.”
