US under Trump Series: Evaluating President Trump’s ‘rule of law’ achievements so far

Despite the ‘fake news’ and ‘biased media’ being enemy number one, the biggest hurdles for President Trump are the Congress and the Senate, which are key to passing his agendas. While President’s own party is holding a sizable majority in the House and likely to do so for the four years, the majority is thin in the Senate, which can be changed next year, when almost 31 seats are up for election and 23 of which are currently held by Democratic opponents.

In 2016, President Trump has not only won the US election by proving the pundits wrong, he flipped many traditional democratic states, some of which hasn’t voted for a Republican in more than three decades. So his performance will be a key factor in that election.

We have discussed two economic parameters that we would keep monitoring to evaluate the performance of the Trump Presidency; Trade balance of the United States and the numbers of jobs in the manufacturing sector. Here we evaluate his policy promises under ‘the rule of law’. His promise of ‘rule of law’ can be broken down into five subsets of policies,

  • Begin removing criminal illegal immigrants: The Process has already begun and thousands of gang members, criminals have already been either deported or jailed.
  • Selecting a judge who would be the replacement of deceased Justice Scalia at the Supreme Court: President Trump has appointed Justice Neil Gorsuch at the Supreme Court.
  • Cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities: This has yet not achieved as a supermajority is required in the Senate to permanently defund the sanctuary cities.
  • Suspend immigration from terror prone regions where vetting cannot be carried out with satisfaction: This remains an area of controversy as president Trump’s travel ban has faced hurdle at US courts. The travel ban has now moved to the Supreme Court.
  • Cancel every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum, and order issued by President Obama: The Trump administration is already working on it.

The performance in this area has been quite satisfactory.
