US under Trump Series: Democrats suffer another humiliating defeat at Georgia special election

Democrats suffered another humiliating loss at the special election in Georgia to win a seat in the House of Representatives. It would have been a local sleepy election, not covered by many news outlets, however, Democrats made it a political sensation as they spent money like President Trump says, “never before”. It became the most expensive local election in the history of the United States as Democrats are looking to show that the moods are turning against Trump.

It has been a traditionally Republican seat for decades but Democrats became cheerful after the victory margin for Donald Trump declined to just 1 percent compared to 23 percent for Mitt Romney four years ago. The newcomer Democratic candidate in that election, Jonathon Ossoff was able to raise more than $23 million throughout the country and spent more than $21 million compared to the Republican candidate Karen Handel’s total spending of a little more than $3 million. His biggest chunk of donations came from California, the Democratic stronghold. However, that failed to pay off as the Republican candidate won the race and improved the margin compared to the 2016 election.

After the victory, supporters of President Trump and the Republican Party started to troll the Democrats and the media by suggesting that it would only be a matter of time before Russia is blamed for the loss. Since the 2016 election, there have been four special elections, which were all portrayed by the Democrats as a referendum on President Trump but they lost all of them.
