The United States House of Representatives Financial Services Committee is going to hold a hearing on virtual currencies on Thursday, 08 June 2017.
The hearing, entitled "Virtual Currency: Financial Innovation and National Security Implications", is being hosted by the Terrorism and Illicit Finance Subcommittee. The one-panel hearing is scheduled to take place in Room 2128 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
Witnesses include Jerry Brito, Executive Director, Coin Center; Scott Dueweke, President, The Identity and Payments Association; Kathryn Haun, Lecturer, Stanford Law School; Jonathan Levin, Co-Founder, Chainalysis; and Luke Wilson, Vice President, Business Development-Investigations, Elliptic.
“This hearing will explore terrorists and illicit use of financial technology (FinTech), the national security implications of virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, and the use of “blockchain” technologies to record transactions and uncover illicit activities”, the memorandum said.
“Witnesses will provide testimony about the exploitation of virtual currency by terrorists and transnational criminal groups, as well as provide risk assessments and policy considerations to mitigate illicit financing but not to impede the development of FinTech innovations.”
According to an online post, Coin Center, a non-profit focused on the policy issues facing cryptocurrencies, is also going to testify at another Congressional hearing, entitled “Improving Consumer’s Financial Options With FinTech”. It is being hosted by the Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
