Turkish post-coup cleansing means more power to Erdogan

The crackdown after a failed coup attempt in Turkey last Saturday have now widened so far that it can now be associated with just one purpose and that is to provide Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan more power over the country, its military, parliament, as well as the education system.

More than 50,000 people have either been rounded up, sacked or suspended, a number that is surely far more than the number of coup attempters. 15,000 workers alone in the education industry have been suspended and the government has called for resignations of the deans of all Turkish universities. Tens of thousands of judges, civil servants, military and police have been fired or detained. The government said that the measures are efforts to root out a wide-ranging conspiracy led by a U.S. based Turkish cleric but it certainly looks out as efforts to root out any oppositions.

Many academics and journalists have been critical of the government in the past and Erdogan is using the coup as an excuse to payback. Turkey has banned the travel of all academics from the country. As of now, it is not clear when this crackdown will end but it is quite clear, but one thing can be said with certainty that Turkey will emerge as an autocratic nation.
