US President Donald Trump on Wednesday endorsed a proposal to transform part of his West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course into a secure presidential retreat similar to Camp David.

“It’s a great idea, and it will be used a lot,” Trump told reporters when questioned about the plan.

Trump said the idea was proposed by the military and the US Secret Service, citing security advantages surrounding Trump International Golf Club. According to the president, the property has no tall buildings overlooking it and relatively few nearby homes.

Trump also highlighted its proximity to the recently renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

“They asked if I’d be willing to do it, and I said I would be,” Trump said, adding that the proposed facility would be intended for future presidents rather than primarily for his own use.

The West Palm Beach golf club was the location of a foiled assassination attempt against Trump in 2024. Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in prison in February after prosecutors said he concealed himself in bushes near the course while carrying a semi-automatic rifle. Secret Service agents apprehended him before he fired a shot.

The Palm Beach Post first reported details of the presidential retreat proposal. According to the newspaper, an attorney representing Trump International Golf Club sent a letter to Palm Beach County officials last month proposing that a section of the property become a permanent facility for US presidents and visiting world leaders. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the contents of the letter.

An attorney for the golf club separately told The Washington Post that Trump would cover the cost of constructing the presidential residence and related facilities.

The proposal could provide presidents with another secure location for meetings, diplomatic gatherings and retreats alongside Camp David, the longstanding presidential retreat in Maryland.

The US Secret Service and Department of Defense did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the proposed Florida presidential facility.
