U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, reinforcing Washington’s military presence in Eastern Europe amid ongoing NATO defense discussions. Trump revealed the decision through a post on Truth Social, highlighting his strong relationship with newly elected Polish President Karol Nawrocki as a key factor behind the move.
The announcement comes shortly after U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that a planned troop deployment to Poland had been temporarily delayed. The United States has recently been reviewing its military footprint across Europe, with expectations growing that Washington could reduce troop levels while encouraging NATO allies to take greater responsibility for regional security and defense spending.
In his statement, Trump praised Nawrocki’s recent election victory and emphasized the importance of U.S.-Poland relations. He noted that he had proudly endorsed Nawrocki during the Polish presidential campaign and described the deployment as a sign of continued cooperation between the two countries. Trump wrote that the successful election of Karol Nawrocki and their strong political relationship influenced his decision to send more American troops to Poland.
Trump previously hosted Nawrocki at the White House in May before the Polish election, offering public support at a critical stage of the campaign. Nawrocki ultimately defeated the candidate backed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-European centrist coalition. The two leaders reportedly met again in September, where Trump discussed expanding the U.S. military presence in Poland and reaffirmed America’s commitment to Poland’s security.
The additional deployment is expected to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank and further deepen military cooperation between the United States and Poland as tensions in Europe continue to shape regional defense strategies in 2026.
