Toyota is recalling approximately 381,000 Tacoma midsize pickup trucks in the U.S. to address a safety issue where a part could detach from the rear axle, heightening the risk of accidents. The recall affects specific trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years.
Toyota's statement on Tuesday highlighted that welding debris left on axle ends could lead to the loosening and eventual detachment of nuts. The Washington Post reported that such detachment may impact stability and brake performance.
Addressing Safety Concerns
While Toyota did not disclose any incidents of crashes or injuries linked to the problem, the automaker is taking proactive measures. Dealers will inspect the rear axles, tightening retaining nuts at zero cost to owners. Any damaged components will be promptly repaired or replaced. Customers are slated to receive notifications via mail in late April.
Increase in Toyota's Global Production
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor announced a notable 7% surge in global vehicle production for January, marking a year-on-year rise for the 13th consecutive month. According to US News, the boost in output led to 740,332 vehicles produced worldwide. Simultaneously, global sales witnessed an approximately 11% increase from the previous year. The U.S. demand played a pivotal role in driving this growth trajectory for Toyota, with sales in the U.S. spiking by 23%. Europe also experienced a positive sales trend with a 2% increase.
Global Sales Performance
Sales in China saw a remarkable 39% uptick, although this rise was influenced by dealers extending their selling days due to Chinese New Year calendar adjustments. Toyota acknowledged the escalating competition in the Chinese market. Despite a 14% decline in domestic sales, the overall global sales performance, including the luxury Lexus brand, showcased resilience and growth momentum.
Hybrid Vehicles Sales
Toyota's gasoline-electric hybrids constituted nearly 40% of the vehicles sold by the largest automaker globally in January. This emphasis on hybrid cars aligns with Toyota's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
The automotive giant's focus on hybrid technology demonstrates its commitment to reducing emissions and aligns with global environmental goals and consumer demand for more energy-efficient vehicles.
