By now, it’s safe to say that Netflix has another hit on its hands with its newest superhero series called “The Umbrella Academy.” A fresh take on the lives of individuals with special abilities and the family dysfunction that is involved in the background, the show is certainly unique in its premise. Right now, Netflix has said nothing about there being a “The Umbrella Academy” Season 2, but it is simply inevitable.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, “The Umbrella Academy” showrunner Steve Blackman revealed that he wants this show to go on for a long time. Specifically, he wants more than just “The Umbrella Academy” Season 2, but also season 3 and beyond.
“I hope we get a second and third and fourth season, but I knew that having a great ending is important for Netflix as a streamer,” Blackman said. “You really want people to say, ‘I’ve got to come back and watch what happens.’”
Considering the hubbub surrounding the show right now and the number of fans asking about “The Umbrella Academy” Season 2, this has certainly been accomplished. The only question now is when Netflix is going to stop playing coy on the matter.
With the cancellation of some of its biggest shows such as “Daredevil” and “The Punisher,” Netflix needs programs that will keep users subscribed to the platform. The superhero series featuring Ellen Page as the troubled Vanya has done a lot towards achieving this. Not renewing the show for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 2 would be a huge mistake that not even Netflix would dare to make.
If “The Umbrella Academy” Season 2 does end up getting scrapped, the streaming service will finally show its biggest symptom of there being something wrong at the executive level. On that note, even if production for the second season starts now, the show won’t be returning until 2020 at the earliest.
