Marvel films are usually described as formulaic in that they are a great mix of humor, action, witty dialogue, and predictable plotlines. However, “Avengers: Endgame” might actually see a deviation in at least some of a Marvel movie’s expected traits by being the darkest flick yet. The trailer makes this clear enough with characters in various forms of struggle.
As the first trailer of “Avengers: Endgame” below shows, the characters are in their own pits of despair following their defeat at the hands of Thanos. They have lost very dear friends, not to mention half the population of the universe. There is no denying that The Avengers lost and they lost in a manner that resulted in incalculable deaths.
The burden of so many victims weighs on the heroes but they are also struggling on a more personal note. Captain America (Chris Evans) is attempting to mount some kind of counterattack, but he clearly has no confidence in his chances of victory. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is adrift in space in the “Avengers: Endgame” clip with no prospects of getting back to Earth.
Marvel has never been in this position before, to be sure, with so many deaths to contend with. The theme of an “Avengers” movie has also never been so grim, which almost makes “Avengers: Endgame” similar to a DC film in tone. Could the filmmakers possibly be following the pattern of the superhero flicks from the rival publishers?
If so, this would certainly be an interesting turn of events since DC itself is starting to present its movies with a lighter tone and it is proving to be a success. Early reactions to “Aquaman” have been quite positive, for example, which is a departure from how “Justice League” was received. When “Avengers: Endgame” premieres on April 26, 2019, there might just be a ton of brooding.
