This is the age of drones as much as it is the age of artificial intelligence. The U.S. Army and the Marine Corps just created a drone that has a payload capacity of 300 lbs. and they want to use it to bring supplies to troops in the field or from camp to camp. With its design looking like a motorcycle with propellers, it has the informal description of being a “hoverbike.”
Officially known as the Joint Tactical Aerial Resupply Vehicle (JTARV), this three-propeller drone unit already underwent test flights at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, The Washington Times reports. The drone received a passing grade and could potentially start delivering essential packages to troops in the field at low altitudes and moving at almost 60 mph through the air.
According to the engineers responsible for the creation of the drone, its success hinged on how the concept was brought to life with close collaboration among the different parties involved and how engineering evaluation was heavily emphasized. It was made to do a job, not to kick up a fuss just because somebody wanted more flair than substance.
The concept of the drone’s use is not exactly that strange either, with researchers even going so far as to consider it the Amazon of the battlefield, The Verge reports. The JTARV should prove to be an incredible asset when it functions as intended as well, largely due to how important the role of military logistics is to actually win wars.
A well-supplied army can keep fighting regardless of how long the conflict lasts, but more importantly, the soldiers themselves will have the resources to bring the conflict to an end as soon as possible. This is why there has always been more personnel in charge of managing supplies compared to those that are on the battlefield.
