WASHINGTON, Jan. 05, 2017 -- The Israel Project today applauded the overwhelming bipartisan effort to rebuke United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which was an historic attack on Israel and an attempt to undermine the right of the Jewish people to have a homeland.
Sponsored by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) and Ranking Member Elliott Engel (D-NY), the bipartisan resolution was the first substantive issue taken up by the House after beginning the session, demonstrating loudly and clearly that the American people oppose the UN’s effort to single out the Jewish state for international condemnation.
“The UN Security Council must rescind its latest resolution targeting Israel, and members of both parties in the U.S. House made that crystal clear today,” said Josh Block, President and CEO of The Israel Project. “If the UN fails to take back this incredibly malicious resolution, Congress must consider all options, including the enforcement of existing congressional statutes and other measures needed to correct the damage and prevent reoccurrence.”
Block added: “Congress’ opposition to the UN vote is critical because it reflects the American people’s continued commitment to peace. This hateful UN resolution severs the Jewish links to Jerusalem’s holiest places and it creates dramatic obstacles on the path to peace and a two-state solution – both longstanding cornerstones of American and international policy.”
The resolution opposing the anti-Israel UN vote passed the full House by a vote of 342-80.
UN Security Council Resolution 2334 passed on December 23rd. It suggests that the location of the Jews’ most holy site, the Western Wall, is not in Israel, and that the Old City of Jerusalem is a "settlement." The Obama Administration broke with longstanding U.S. policy of vetoing such resolutions, abstaining and allowing the biased resolution to pass.
