‘The Bachelorette’ season 12 will open to welcome Joelle “JoJo” Fletcher back to ABC as the season’s latest leading lady. The beautiful real estate broker from season 10 of ‘The Bachelor’ came in as runner-up following Lauren Bushnell’s win for Ben Higgins’ heart.
The announcement came after May 16’s live episode of ‘The Bachelor’ after Higgins’ pick of the winner. According to Variety, Fletcher’s comeback was a staggering surprise after it was speculated that Caila Quinn would be taking over for the latest season of ‘The Bachelorette’. Quinn, a software sales representative from Ohio, came in third place in Higgins’ season.
The reality show reportedly faced some criticism over its lack of diversity on the part of its contestants. Paul Lee, former ABC president, said that the show is taking steps to include diverse leads. He said, “We’re doing a whole lot of tweaks. We have the farm team, right, which allows us to then pick the next one. But I’d be very surprised if ‘The Bachelorette’ in the summer isn’t diverse. I think that’s likely … The tweaks that [creator] Mike Fleiss has put in place will get us where we want to go.”
Fletcher is of Persian ancestry on her mother’s side. The Texan beauty admitted, “I’m proud of my mother’s background despite what social opinions are. It’s important for me to stand up to people stereotyping Iranians.” So far, no contestant of African-American descent has been cast in both ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette’.
An article on Reality Steve managed to reveal 21 out of its 26 contestants vying for Fletcher’s heart in season 12. Derek Peth, a banker living in New York, is reportedly the first contestant to get a date with Fletcher on a private plane to San Francisco. Daniel Maguire, a model and personal trainer from Vancouver, and Nick Benvenutti of Florida have also joined in.
Other contestants include Christian Bishop, Wells Adams, Jake Pavelka, Chase McNary, and James Fuertes. Six of the men will be heading home after their face-to-face dates with Fletcher. ‘The Bachelorette’ season 12 is set to premiere on ABC on May 23, 2016.
