Universal Music Group signed a new licensing deal with TikTok a few months after withdrawing its artists’ music catalog from the platform. The companies were able to settle their music royalty disagreements and AI-related issues and agreed to work together again.
This means that the music of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Drake, Alicia Keys, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, and more are returning to the TikTok platform for fans and app users to enjoy. As per CNBC, Universal Music officially revealed its new pact with the ByteDance-owned short video-sharing company on Thursday, May 2.
Agreed Terms Between Universal Music and TikTok
UMG and TikTok agreed to key changes, including offering better remuneration for singers and songwriters. They will also offer promotional opportunities for their recordings and launch protections against generative AI. The companies also vowed to remove “fake artist” AI songs from the platform.
The joint agreement surely starts a new era of strategic collaboration. The partners promised to provide the necessary support to help UMG’s artists and songwriters achieve their full potential in the business.
Favorite UMG Artists’ Comeback on the TikTok Platform
With the conflicts resolved and a signed new deal, fans can look forward to the return of all UMG artists’ music and publishing catalogs. Users may create videos with music from superstar singers without worrying about copyright infringement.
“This new chapter in our relationship with TikTok focuses on the value of music, the primacy of human artistry and the welfare of the creative community,” Universal Music Group’s chairman and chief executive officer, Sir Lucian Grainge, said in a press release. “We look forward to collaborating with the team at TikTok to further the interests of our artists and songwriters and drive innovation in fan engagement while advancing social music monetization.”
TikTok’s chief, Shou Chew, commented, “Music is an integral part of the TikTok ecosystem and we are pleased to have found a path forward with Universal Music Group. We are committed to working together to drive value, discovery and promotion for all of UMG’s amazing artists and songwriters, and deepen their ability to grow, connect and engage with the TikTok community.”
