Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the United States on February 12-13, 2025, and discuss several matters with President Trump concerning trade, defense, and energy.
One of the big points will be on reduction in tariffs. Modi aims to decrease import tariffs and reviving the trade discussions for a trade agreement so that India gets back the benefits from the GSP, which was withdrawn from India by the U.S. in 2019. India has already cut some of the tariffs on U.S. imports, such as expensive motorcycles.
He is also going to speak about the increased purchase of defense equipment from the United States, which includes fighter jets and drones. India is looking for 31 drones, approximately $4 billion, and is seeking 114 fighter jets.
They will talk about cooperation on nuclear energy, especially small modular reactors. Recent changes to India's nuclear laws should be encouraging enough for U.S. companies to assist in the supply of reactors for power plants.
