Spotify Could Be Offering Headphones, Smartwatches, And Wearables, Job Postings Suggest

As one of the most popular and controversial applications in the music business, Spotify holds a place in the hearts and smartphones of millions. This puts it in a very good position to expand in other areas. According to recent job postings by the company, Spotify could be entering the hardware scene soon, making things like earphones and smartwatches.

Dave Zatz at ZatsNotFunny.com was the first to notice the job listings, where the details seem to hint at a need for hardware experts by Spotify. The listings have since been pulled, but from what was gathered during its posting, the music streaming service was looking for someone to fill a Senior Product Manager position to handle its Hardware team.

"You will be leading an initiative to deliver hardware directly from Spotify to existing and new customers; a [category-defining] product akin to Pebble Watch, Amazon Echo, and Snap Spectacles," the job posting read.

Spotify also added on the listing that the work of the successful applicant “will define the product requirements for internet-connected hardware, the software that powers it, and work[s] with suppliers/manufacturers to deliver the optimal Spotify experience to millions of users.” With all of these details combined, it’s practically guaranteed that the company is working on a physical product to host its music streaming service.

So far, Spotify has remained mum on the issue, not commenting on whether or not the speculations have any merit. However, as Snap Inc.’s Spectacles and Amazon’s Alexa products have already shown, software companies are no longer shackled by conventions, PC Mag reports.

More than that, Spotify has already shown that its service works well on wearables, with the Samsung Gear S3’s hosting of the platform being a good example, CNET notes. Then again, it’s different when a software company with no hardware experience decides to build its own physical product compared to relying on a brand that has decades of building excellent gadgets under its belt.
