Skype co-founder wants to solve social ills using blockchain technology

Co-founder of Skype, Jaan Tallinn has been working on a new project and has decided to explore blockchain technology in order to save the world.

Tallinn has been a pioneer in "effective altruism" project which is a social movement focused on most effective ways to improve the world.

He has spent a whole year working out how blockchain technology can be used to resolve humanity’s biggest problems, from crime and corruption to deforestation and over-fishing.

Tallinn is a speaker at the International Festival for Business 2016 which is being held at Liverpool. He is compiling a research paper on ways of using blockchain to create more coordination mechanisms.

“The interesting thing about blockchain is that it has made it possible for humanity to reach a consensus about a piece of data without having any authority to dictate it,” Tallinn said. “Imagine if you could use this to solve bigger problems that require global coordination.”

According to telegraph.co.uk, Tallinn explained about cases of a coordination mechanism by giving an example of how fishermen can resolve a problem of endangered fish being killed with the help of co-ordination mechanism.

Tallinn read a blog after which he decided to apply the principles of blockchain technology to solve social ills. “They are all locked in equilibrium where the players cannot change the outcome of the game,” Tallinn said.

Tallinn is an Estonian programmer who participated in the development of Skype in 2002. He is a partner and co-founder of the development company Bluemoon which created the game SkyRoads. He is also one of the founders of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk and the Future of Life Institute and was a co-founder of the personalized medical research company MetaMed. Tallinn is a former member of the Estonian President's Academic Advisory Board.
