‘Sherlock’ Season 5 Latest News & Update: Return of BBC Series Still Uncertain After a Year

Almost exactly one year ago, fans saw Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) endure “the final problem” by the end of season 4. Unfortunately, 365 days later, fans still do not have an idea if “Sherlock” season 5 is ever going to happen.

Even the title for the season 4 finale seemingly suggests that “Sherlock” season 5 is unlikely happening. However, it is important to note that BBC never referred to the fourth season as the franchise’s final installment.

However, the lack of an official word on the show’s renewal for “Sherlock” season 5 is understandably the reason why there are speculations it might never happen. But the series creators are leaning towards the possibility of having a fifth installment — not anytime soon, though.

“Nobody has ever closed the door on ‘Sherlock.’ … We haven’t got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn’t do it again. … It’s not the kind of show that has to come back all the time. It can revisit,” series co-creator Steven Moffat previously told RadioTimes when asked about their plans for “Sherlock” season 5. When Moffat spoke about the “collective enthusiasm” in doing “Sherlock” season 5, he could also be referring to Cumberbatch and Freeman wanting to return for the miniseries.

Co-showrunner Mark Gatiss also told the same publication, “We’re doing ‘Dracula,’ which is going to take two years at least. We’re not going to do ‘Sherlock’ whilst we’re doing ‘Dracula.’ So it’s not going to happen in the immediate future. Never say never, but no – we don’t have an idea [right now].” When it was rumored that the cast and crew will soon assemble again for the making of “Sherlock” season 5, it was also Gatiss who dismissed that report so as not to prematurely excite the show’s dedicated fanbase.
