One of the biggest and most recent updates about “Sherlock” season 5 came from an unlikely source. It was suggested that the series is going to be renewed and will enter production soon. But how accurate is this information?
Earlier this year, Speedy's Cafe owner Chris Georgiou told Time Out he has heard from members of the production staff about the making of “Sherlock” season 5. Speedy’s Cafe is the restaurant adjacent to Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson’s (Martin Freeman) 221b Baker Street apartment.
While that address is fictional, Speedy’s Cafe is a real business and the producers decided to maintain its real name for the show. Georgiou previously said, “I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but I’ve heard they’ll be coming back for a fifth season.”
Many fans certainly hoped that it was true. Unfortunately, the information that the Speedy’s Cafe owner received was inaccurate as confirmed by no less than “Sherlock” season 5 co-creator Mark Gatiss. In less than a week since Time Out’s story was out, Gatiss told a Twitter fan that the statement was “utter nonsense.”
Now, it is even clearer why the said information was inaccurate. Gatiss and Steven Moffat have been busy working on a different project -- the TV series adaptation of “Dracula.” This is one of the obvious reasons why the production of “Sherlock” season 5 will have to wait in the pipeline for a little longer.
Gatiss confirmed to Radio Times that making “Dracula” will likely run for two years. Does this mean “Sherlock” season 5’s premiere date is slated in 2021 or even later?
Meanwhile, the lack of official updates or any sort of announcements about “Sherlock” season 5 might have also caused some confusion and misunderstanding even between its main stars. Earlier this year, Martin Freeman’s statement did not sit well with Benedict Cumberbatch. The former seemingly implied that working on the show has become quite toxic.
However, Freeman later responded that his words were misinterpreted. “The show itself, I’m well aware of its importance in my life, both professionally and personally, because I love the show. I’m a fan of the show. Unfortunately, that’s the joy of being quoted out of context, and joy of newspapers needing a headline, even though the headline is not something I ever said at any point in the interview,” Freeman explained to The Daily Beast.
