Samsung is hoping to surpass Sony’s market share in the global image sensor sector with the release of its ISOCELL Auto 4AC, its first ISOCELL image sensor tailored for automotive applications.
Sony captures around 45 percent of the global image sensor market, with Samsung at about 20 percent.
The ISOCELL Auto 4AC will be used in vehicles set for release in the second half of this year.
Samsung’s executive vice president of sensor business Chang Duckhyun noted that starting with the ISOCELL Auto 4AC, Samsung will expand its automotive sensor lineup to areas such as camera monitor systems, autonomous driving, and in-cabin monitoring.
Industry observers expect the automotive image sensor market to increase 11 percent per annum from this year to 2024 due to the fast growth of the self-driving car segment, which is nearly double the 6.8 percent growth forecast for the overall image sensor market.
