Russian forces struck the northeastern Ukrainian city of Balakliia on Friday, killing two people and injuring two others as the war continues to affect communities across the Kharkiv region.

Vitali Karabanov, head of the Balakliia city military administration, reported the casualties on Telegram following the September 18 attack. According to preliminary information, two people died in the shelling, while two injured residents were taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The Russian attack also sparked a fire at the site of the strike. Private residential properties sustained damage, including damaged roofs and shattered windows, local authorities said. Officials were continuing to assess the full extent of the destruction following the attack.

Balakliia is located in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, an area that has experienced repeated fighting and strikes since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The city has played a notable role during the conflict. Russian troops captured Balakliia during the early stages of the invasion as Moscow’s forces advanced into northeastern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces later regained control of the city during a major counteroffensive in September 2022.

Friday’s attack highlights the continuing security risks facing residents of Kharkiv and other areas near the front lines. Homes and civilian infrastructure have repeatedly been exposed to damage as fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces continues.

The latest casualties add to the human toll of the Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued for more than four years since the start of the full-scale invasion.

Both Moscow and Kyiv have denied deliberately targeting civilians during the conflict.
