Police Union Flips to Back CLARITY Act After Crypto Crackdown Tweaks

The National Fraternal Order of Police has changed its earlier position and now backs the most recent form of the CLARITY Act as legislators changed the wording on cryptocurrency enforcement and police authority. The organization stated in its most recent letter that the measure currently contains clauses strengthening state and local police's capacity to guard consumers, look into financial crimes, and cooperate with federal allies.

Since the FOP had before contended that an earlier form of the legislation would compromise prosecutors' capacity to pursue crypto-related offenses, this is a significant change. The modification indicates that by defining inquiry authority and tightening portions of the bill about digital asset supervision, legislators addressed at least some of those issues.

The larger meaning is political and legal. A big police union supporting the measure increases the CLARITY Act's credibility as it approaches Senate consideration since it addresses one of the main law-enforcement concerns that had slowed down the bill's passage.
