The Department of Justice (DOJ) of the Philippines has charged two Russian citizens with stealing XRP cryptocurrency from a local cryptocurrency exchange. The theft is worth PHP340 million ($6.2 million).
To commit the theft, the suspects are said to have hacked into the system of Coins.ph. Even though there are continuous attempts to counteract these dangers, the Department of Justice underlined the significance of remaining vigilant against cybercrime.
According to the Department of Justice of the Philippines, Russia has been accused of stealing 340 million Philippine pesos in cryptocurrency.
An announcement was made by the Department of Justice (DOJ) of the Philippines last week that criminal charges have been brought against two Russian nationals for the theft of XRP cryptocurrency from a local dealer. The amount of money stolen is roughly $6.2 million, equivalent to PHP340 million.
According to the charges that were presented to the Taguig Regional Trial Court, the defendants, Vladimir Evgenevich Avdeev and Sergey Yaschuck, are being accused of violating Republic Act No. 10175, which is the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Two individuals named Avdeev and Yaschuck, who had previously worked as consultants for the cryptocurrency exchange Coins.ph, which Betur Inc. owned, are suspected of breaking into the company's computer systems and stealing 12.2 million XRP, which had a value of more than PHP340 million.
After observing unusual login activity, Coins.ph, a company that handles remittances, money transfers, and foreign currency exchanges, discovered the security compromise. During the platform's investigation, it was discovered that the suspects fully understood the network infrastructure and security measures.
On behalf of the Department of Justice, Justice Secretary Jesus Remulla underlined the department's dedication to upholding the rule of law in cyberspace.
He stated: "It is the Department of Justice's mandate to ensure that the Rule of Law is upheld at all times, and this extends even in cyberspace." He emphasized the significance of remaining vigilant and warned against cybercriminals' ever-evolving strategies to take advantage of technical breakthroughs.
Avdeev is being charged with 23 counts of cybercrime, and his bail has been set at PHP120,000 per count. Yaschuck is being charged with three charges, and his bail terms are the same. According to the allegations, the suspects attempted to conceal their involvement in the theft by laundering the cash through a variety of cryptocurrency platforms to escape detection.
