Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 may face emulation challenges akin to its predecessor, as new leaks indicate it will utilize the same ROM format and tools, potentially making its games easy targets for emulators.
Switch 2 to Launch by 2025 with Improved Hardware
If previous rumors are to be believed, Nintendo will unveil the Switch 2 before March of 2025, and it will boast improved hardware over its predecessor. Nonetheless, according to Centro LEAKS's latest report, the next portable game system would employ the identical set of tools and ROM format.
Same ROM Format Sparks Emulation Concerns
Even though it will use new encryption keys, the games will be just as easy to imitate as those on the original Nintendo Switch thanks to the same ROM format and tools.
Because of this, the corporation has probably taken drastic steps to remove Yuzu, Suyu, and Ryujinx from the internet, even though they were released to the public years ago.
Minimal Emulator Changes for Switch 2
After all, these emulators wouldn't need much tweaking to run games on the future gaming handheld (Switch 2) if it really uses the same ROM format and tools as the current-gen model (now $269.99 on Amazon).
Sales of Nintendo's upcoming system could take a hit because, at launch, the exclusive games would be playable on other systems, Notebookcheck shares.
Codename "Ounce" Linked to Switch 2 Development
In reference to the other rumours concerning Nintendo Switch 2, a codename for the gaming handheld may have been leaked recently involving Game Freak, the studio responsible for the Pokemon series. There have been hints in the past that its codename will be "Ounce," and now more reports confirm this.
Unreal Engine 5 Support Attracts Third-Party Developers
It has also been rumored that the hardware of the portable gaming device will be able to support Unreal Engine 5 capabilities. As a result, the community of third-party developers may be more willing to promote the upcoming console.
In addition, unlike the first console, the Switch 2 will supposedly have significant third-party AAA ports available right out of the box.
