Even before winning the election, Donald Trump’s statements and actions during campaign rallies were enough to cause a string of controversies. It was then not surprising that it continued even after he won the 2016 presidential election. However, what has been more interesting was how his marriage with First Lady Melania Trump became a constant subject of rumors and the long-running speculations that they are bound to get divorced.
Melania Trump, Donald Trump: What happens if they get divorced while still in office
The first couple has repeatedly insisted that their marriage is fine. But the relentless divorce rumors may have been making some people wonder what would happen if they decided to end their marriage while they are still in the White House.
The curiosity on this speculative subject is likely rooted in what would happen to Melania’s position as the first lady. Technically, first ladies are only appointed by the elected president, but there is no law requiring the office of the first lady to be occupied by the president’s wife.
Throughout the history of America’s democracy, there have been several Presidents served with first ladies who were not their wives. Some of the American presidents were not married or were already widowed by the time they took office. For example, Andrew Jackson’s wife died shortly before becoming America’s president, so he appointed his wife’s niece Emily Donelson to the job. What does this mean if the Trumps would get divorced? Trump could decide whether to choose a new first lady, and Melania would then have to vacate the East Wing.

Writer Monica Byrne has also previously claimed through a series of now-deleted tweets that the President was aware of Melania’s alleged affair, but they reportedly opted to postpone their divorce when he defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016.
