The “Maleficent” movie franchise is one of the most unique examples of films in the industry because of how it is basically led by female characters in a blockbuster setting. For the most part, the males are either enemies or side characters who might have been added as an afterthought. In “Maleficent 2,” this trend is likely to be the same, with Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent walking some rather grey areas. More interestingly is how the villain this time is actually a villainess in the form of another kingdom’s Queen.

A poster for “Maleficent 2” has already been released and it features the three main characters in the film, CBR reports. The image sees Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), Maleficent, and Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning). From this promotional material, it’s clear that the theme of this movie will be that of female empowerment of all kinds, which is quite an interesting way to go.

The characters are basically created to embody the many ways in which powerful people use that power. In the case of Aurora, her innocence, beauty, and purity are what makes her so compelling. Then there is the matter of Queen Ingrith who is most likely to embody the kind of venomous, scheming face attributed to the dirtier side of power in “Maleficent 2.”

Finally, there is Maleficent who will become increasingly merciless in her quest to fulfill her role as a protector of the Moors. This will likely drive her to declare herself an enemy of humans and for a good reason. Even so, her actions are bound to be the greyer aspect of “Maleficent 2” that makes for compelling anti-heroes.

With this being the case, “Maleficent 2” will be a unique film in that it doesn’t try to paint women in powerful positions as just good or evil. This flick will be worth the watch when it hits theatres on Oct. 16.
