MORTON GROVE, Ill., Feb. 23, 2017 -- Lifeway Foods, Inc. (Nasdaq:LWAY) announced today that the company will begin using green polyethylene, a material that is made of sugarcane, a renewable resource, for its Lifeway Organic product line. The shift from standard polyethylene to a more sustainable packaging alternative enables Lifeway to significantly reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions associated with its operations.
A thermoplastic resin, Lifeway’s new green polyethylene bottles are recyclable and use plant-based materials instead of fossil-based. By choosing a greener alternative in packaging, Lifeway is fulfilling a crucial component of its mission, which includes environmental sustainability as well as the company’s commitment to: using only all-natural, hormone- and GMO-free ingredients, global philanthropy, responsible sourcing and renewable energy initiatives.
“In addition to a growing appetite for healthier foods, people are paying closer attention to how their purchases impact the environment,” said Julie Smolyansky, President and CEO of Lifeway Foods. “Lifeway has always been committed to green business practices and environmental sustainability, so we felt that choosing a greener packaging alternative was the natural next step. We want customers to recognize that everything, from the ingredients we use to the packaging of our kefir, is good for our customers and the environment.”
Lifeway’s bottles are all 100% recyclable and BPA-free, and the company uses biodegradable plastics when possible, including cups, spoons, straws and napkins that are made from 100% recycled, unbleached paper. The company frequently reviews its sustainability efforts with a goal of minimizing its environmental impact and purchases renewable energy credits to offset electricity used in production.
