A proof of concept connecting the bank's mobile app, Toss's QR payment system, and merchant terminals for stablecoin payments has been finished by Gwangju Bank and fintech company Toss. Customers in the simulated flow begin in the bank app, scan a merchant QR code via Toss, verify the amount, and send stablecoins to the merchant's wallet; the outcome is shown back in the bank app.
Using virtual merchants, the trial was conducted in a constrained, non-production setting free from actual clients or assets and not a product launch. It confirmed the end-to-end payment and settlement process as well as the presentation of digital asset data. Both businesses said the test was preparation for future digital-asset payment platforms—perhaps including won-pegged stablecoins.
The program started as South Korea creates a regulatory system for stablecoin companies; commercial use will rely on licensing and ultimate rules. The test indicates that the technical connections between banks, fintech apps, and QR terminals are possible and sets early movers for maybe competition with card and e-money suppliers. A larger won-stablecoin sector might also help local crypto trading and KRW liquidity to connect.
