BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 22, 2018 -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2018 – More than any other generation of wireless, 5G is seeing research and input from a vast array of companies, universities and research institutions. At Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona (February 26 – March 1, 2018), wireless research and development company InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) is placing the emphasis on collaboration, with demo technologies and solutions that are designed from the start to form the basis for open research collaboration. Under the banner of “Creating the Living Network.™ Together.” InterDigital is highlighting technologies and research that underpin its network of more than 100 research collaborators across more than a dozen projects worldwide.
“Obviously, there are some giant companies that are doing very interesting things in advancing 5G, but, more than any other generation of wireless, 5G provides an opportunity for smaller companies, research institutions and universities to make their mark, given the immensity and broad scope of the challenges and use cases,” said Dr. Robert DiFazio, Vice President, InterDigital Labs. “InterDigital understands the vital importance of collaboration through various projects like Horizon 2020 in Europe, PAWR in the U.S., and other important projects. We also understand that, to be a valued contributor, our technologies and solutions have to minimize proprietary approaches and instead provide as open and flexible a platform as possible.”
The company’s presence at MWC 2018 showcases how the next generation of wireless will be brought to life through an expansive 5G research community:
- 5G Testbeds: Industry testbeds are validating 5G technology and demonstrating interoperability among an ecosystem of research collaborators. InterDigital will showcase two platforms, EdgeLink™ 60Hz Platform and Flexible IP-based Services Platform (FLIPS), that have been used in global field trials in conjunction with projects that include 5G-Crosshaul, 5TONIC, Bristol is Open, FLAME, PAWR, and 5G-Transformer, among others.
- 5G Air Interface: The millimeter wave (mmWave) air interface is one of the key new technologies being introduced into 3GPP’s 5G NR standard. The company will show its contribution to the Open Air Interface Alliance, fundamental concepts enabling mmWave 5G integration with the existing LTE standard in non-standalone mode.
- 5G Video Experience: As an active contributor to the next generation video standard development, InterDigital will demonstrate an end-to-end 360 video live streaming platform with AR capabilities built on a series of state-of-the-art video standards.
- 5G Networks: The major trend in 5G networks is that of combining connectivity, computing and storage resources into a rich fabric of networked elements, implementing network-based as well as terminal-based software functions. The company will showcase how its FLIPS platform, utilized in numerous EU projects including RIFE, POINT and FLAME, takes advantage of this trend by providing a software-based solution on top of proliferating 5G technologies.
In addition to demonstrations, InterDigital will host “Delivering the 5G Experience with Mobile Edge Services” and “Research Directions for 5G and Beyond Testbeds,” two live panel discussions featuring participants from Intel, Nokia, Martel, and University Carlos III of Madrid, among others, on Wednesday, February 28 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. CET, respectively.
Attendees of Mobile World Congress can see the panel discussions along with 5G and IoT demos at InterDigital’s pavilion in Hall 7, Stand 7C61.
