ICE Officer Shoots Man in Austin, Sparking Calls for Independent Probe

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and wounded a man in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, prompting local officials to demand an independent investigation into the incident.

The man was shot in the torso shortly before 1 p.m. local time and transported to a hospital in serious but stable condition, according to Austin officials. Police Chief Lisa Davis said preliminary information indicated the shooting occurred during a brief foot pursuit. Austin police were not involved in the federal operation.

Authorities initially provided few details about what led to the shooting. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not immediately provide additional information. Davis said Austin police investigators were at the scene and communicating with federal authorities.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson called for local police and other outside authorities to participate in the investigation, arguing that independent oversight would strengthen public confidence in the findings. U.S. Representative Greg Casar, a Texas Democrat whose district includes parts of Austin, separately called for an independent investigation and the release of footage connected to the shooting.

The incident drew protesters to the scene in North Austin, where local media showed a dark blue Toyota Corolla with damage to its passenger-side door. A large law enforcement presence was also reported.

The Austin shooting comes amid increased ICE enforcement activity nationwide under President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. Federal immigration agents have been involved in several other shootings this year, intensifying scrutiny of enforcement tactics and calls for greater transparency.

Casar said federal authorities should preserve evidence and cooperate with local, state and federal oversight bodies as investigators work to establish exactly what happened.
