With the sixth season of Game of Thrones heating up, HBO has been rabidly protecting the property against any kinds of leaks that could spoil the plot of upcoming episodes. Unfortunately, it seems hackers are just hell-bent on spoiling things for everyone as videos and other details about the show were recently stolen.
The hack was revealed on Monday when HBO sent out emails to staff members, saying that “proprietary information” was just stolen, The Washington Post reports. Specifics with regards to what kind of data was stolen were not given. However, some are speculating that the information could include certain plot points for upcoming episodes and perhaps even some episodes that are already set to air.
The email came via HBO CEO Richard Plepler, telling staff that “there has been a cyber incident directed at the company which has resulted in some stolen proprietary information, including some of our programming. Any intrusion of this nature is obviously disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing for all of us”. This is only natural, particularly given how GoT is so dependent on twists to please its audience.
In an Entertainment Weekly report, it would seem that the hackers got away with up to 1.5 Terabytes of data as well. Assuming that a lot of this is composed of video data, it would be enough to consist of several of the show’s episodes and then some.
The hackers seem to be having a lot of fun with leaking data as well since written material about GoT’s fourth episode in the current season was just released. More leaks were promised by the hackers, which should have HBO’s executives scrambling to put out the fires. In an email that seems to have come from the perpetrators, the glee stemming from committing the act is quite apparent.
“Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.”
