Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) will develop 1.5 gigawatts of offshore wind power farms near Ulsan in cooperation with Green Investment Group (GIG) and Total.
Top executives of the three firms joined a webinar hosted by Ulsan Mayor Song Cheol-ho to ascertain how to cooperate on the projects.
GIG global head Mark Dooley and Total Senior Vice President Julien Pouget pledged to establish a local supply chain for the projects.
According to Dooley, they aim to promote participation from local companies and discuss running a workforce training and education program with local universities.
GIG also plans to offer online lectures, scholarships, and internship programs regarding the projects.
On the other hand, HHI will construct floating structures for wind turbines.
HHI President Han Young-seok promised to utilize the company’s expertise in shipbuilding and offshore engineering in their full-scale cooperation.
Han revealed that HHI was looking for a new growth engine due to the sluggishness of the shipbuilding industry when renewable energy and the floating offshore wind power projects grabbed their attention.
According to an Ulsan city government official, HHI was previously lukewarm about the projects but eventually decided to take part.
