H. Arnold Papernick, OD Offers Sight-Saving Tips for Save Your Vision Month

MOUNT PLEASANT, Pa., March 26, 2017 -- March is Save Your Vision Month, and in recognition, H. Arnold Papernick, OD has released several tips for preserving sight. He and his office note that many people spend the majority of the workday looking at computer screens, and they need to take steps to prevent computer vision syndrome. This syndrome includes blurry vision, headaches, and neck pain. Those who don't work on computers need to protect their sight as well. There are both general and job-specific dangers that need to be countered on a regular basis.

"Computer vision syndrome develops over time from spending several hours per day looking at digital screens. Poor posture, long-term focus on light-emitting devices, and time spent sitting all combine to create problems for the entire head and neck. The eyes are especially vulnerable, so the syndrome takes its name from vision problems that can result," Dr. H Arnold Papernick, OD explained.

According to the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) 2015 survey, 58 percent of Americans have experienced either digital eye strain or other vision problems due to the amount of time they spend looking at computers. This shows that many either do not know how to prevent such problems or simply get too engrossed in what they're doing to remember to maintain good posture or take breaks.

"Combatting these problems starts with giving your eyes a break from looking at the computer. The AOA recommends looking at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. It's called the 20-20-20 rule. People also need to remember to blink while working on the computer. Most typically blink far less often than they should once they're engaged with a device. It's also a good idea to use a glare filter on the screen or wear anti-glare glasses. Postural issues need to be addressed too. Set up the screen so that it's about 4-5 inches below your eyes. Finally, avoid sitting too close to the computer," Dr. Papernick suggested.

Computer use, of course, is not the only cause of vision problems. Save Your Vision Month is a great time to follow one of the most proven ways of helping to prevent sight loss: going to an optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam. This will allow problems to be spotted and treated before they become too advanced to effectively stop or treat. Even diseases that were once considered untouchable, such as glaucoma, can be greatly slowed or halted with early intervention using modern treatments.
