Google just signed a deal with the Murdoch family’s News Corp this week. The partnership has been labeled as “historic” since this is the first time that a tech company has joined forces with a news media conglomerate.

As stated in the announcement, the landmark deal includes agreements on ad revenue sharing and the development of a subscription platform. The collaborative venture comes as the Australian proposed news media law threatens to jeopardize Google’s operations in the country.
Australia is proposing a bill that will force Google to pay for all the Australian news content that will appear on its site. They also want tech companies to pay in a lump sum rather than per click, so many firms, including Facebook, are opposing the proposal.
In any case, with the News Corp agreeing to join Google News Showcase, the American tech giant may be able to feature news content from various publishers, including those in Australia. This is because News Corp is one of the largest media groups in the world and known as a media powerhouse that houses news publishing networks in broadcast, online, and in print.
With the alliance, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, Barron’s, and MarketWatch are now listed under Google News Showcase. In the UK, The Times, The Sun, and The Sunday Times are among the News Corp’s publications that are joining Google.
And this is not all, in Australia, several news platforms such as Sky News, News.Com.Au, The Australian, and other local publishers are in the deal as well. Audio and video journalism is also in the arrangement, and this is where they will be using YouTube.
Positive effects of Google’s new business collaboration
Google and News Corp inked a three-year contract for their partnership. As per CNBC, the news of the deal sent Rupert Murdoch’s company’s stock soaring.
“Today’s agreement with News Corp covers a wide range of our products such as News Showcase, YouTube, Web Stories, Audio and our ad technology,” the publication quoted Don Harrison, president of global partnerships at Google, as saying in a statement.
Finally, with the addition of Murdoch's media conglomerate in Google, the company’s News Showcase now has agreements with more than 500 publications worldwide. This means that the tech firm can continue to bring news to readers anywhere in the world without any issues.
