"God of War: Ragnarok" is launching soon but, like the fate of most upcoming games, parts of its gameplay and story have started to leak online. Developer Santa Monica Studio has since addressed the issue, asking fans to "be considerate" of those who do not want to be spoiled.
This is not entirely new as some in-game screenshots reportedly started circulating on Twitter last week. A few days later, though, more leaks were posted on various platforms, including videos of boss fight scenes between Kratos and Freya. Videos and photos seem to be coming from various sources, and they have been uploaded on various pages on Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit.
While most of the original posts have since been taken down, copies of leaked "God of War: Ragnarok" gameplay screenshots and videos continue to spread on the said platform. A quick search on gaming leaks-dedicated subreddits will immediately show results of the said leaks or links where people can view or download them.
It can be quite disappointing, especially for players who want to dive into "God of War: Ragnarok" without any knowledge of what is going to happen in the story. But the flood of online leaks has also been a major letdown for the developers. "We ask that you please be considerate of the many fans who do not want to accidentally see clips, gameplay, or narrative spoilers and avoid sharing them wider," Santa Monica Studio said in a statement. "We are doing our best to limit the exposure of unsanctioned footage and screenshots, but the reality is that we cannot catch everything."
Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog has also shared his personal reactions to the leaks, seemingly confirming in a tweet that retailers have started selling physical copies of "God of War: Ragnarok" weeks ahead of launch. Barlog mentioned in another post that the situation makes a case for just putting an installer, instead of the full game, in a disc. But he later clarified that the statement was just an expression of his frustration. "Not advocating for that at all. Not the future i want as a gamer or dev," Barlog added.
Santa Monica Studio has also advised players to mute certain keywords related to "God of War: Ragnarok" for a better chance to avoid spoilers. This can be easily done on Twitter by clicking the three-dot button on the left-side navigation panel. Under "Settings and Support," choose "Settings and privacy." Open the "Privacy and safety" tab, and choose the "Mute and block" option.
"God of War: Ragnarok" will be released on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
