Global Geo-political Series: EU’s Mogherini says no renegotiation of Iran nuclear deal

After Wednesday’s meeting with Iran and other six world powers on the sidelines of United Nation’s General Assembly, where the U.S. President Donald Trump was a speaker and heavily criticized the Iran nuclear agreement, the European Union’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that there will be no renegotiations over Iran nuclear agreement. According to her, all parties in the deal remains fully compliant with the agreement.

Ms. Mogehrini confirmed that during the meeting, questions were raised over United States’ commitment to the deal after President Trump once again criticized the agreement during his speech at the UN general assembly and branded the deal as one of the worst to be ever made. However, she has affirmed that there is no need to renegotiate parts of the agreement. She added, “This is an agreement that prevented a nuclear program and potentially prevented a military intervention….We all agreed on the fact that there is no violation, that the nuclear program-related aspects, which is all the agreement, are being fulfilled”.

U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson confirmed U.S. acknowledgment that Iran is in compliance with the deal and U.S. commitment to the deal, however, he added that President Trump is weighing on arguments from both sides to make a final judgment.  He said, “We’ve had sufficient time to get our own kind of direct understanding of this agreement and how it functions. I think the time has come for a decision to be made”. He added that President Trump has already made up his mind on the matter but didn’t disclose any further details.

Along with the EU, Russia has voiced its support for the agreement.
