California Governor Gavin Newsom has requested nearly $40 billion in federal disaster relief to help Los Angeles recover from last month’s devastating wildfires. The request, first reported by The Washington Post, aims to fund response efforts, debris removal, and infrastructure repairs.

Newsom emphasized the urgency in a social media post, urging Congress to support Californians in rebuilding. "It’s going to take an all-hands-on-deck approach," he stated, stressing the immediate need for aid.

The fires, which ravaged areas like Pacific Palisades and Altadena, resulted in 29 deaths and the destruction of over 16,000 structures. The economic impact is expected to be massive, with AccuWeather estimating losses exceeding $250 billion—potentially the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

Newsom’s letter to congressional leaders outlined the breakdown of requested funds: $16.8 billion for fire response, debris cleanup, and infrastructure repairs, along with $9.9 billion for rebuilding housing and public utilities. He also hinted at potential future funding requests as the state assesses long-term recovery needs.

Earlier this month, Newsom met with U.S. President Donald Trump, urging federal support for disaster relief. California’s economic losses will take years to fully quantify, making immediate financial assistance critical for affected communities.

The governor’s appeal highlights the urgent need for federal intervention as the state works to rebuild homes, roads, and essential services in the wake of the catastrophic wildfires.
