French ILO jobless rate remains unchanged in Q3 2018

French unemployment rate remained unchanged on average in the third quarter of this year. The average ILO jobless rate in metropolitan France and the overseas departments stayed at 9.1 percent of the labor force, the same as in the prior quarter, according to INSEE.  The number of unemployed persons in metropolitan France rose by 22,000 to 2.6 million people. The jobless rate among youths, especially among young men, rose by 1 point.

Meanwhile, long-term unemployment fell a bit. Among the unemployed, 1 million declared that they had been seeking a job for at least one year. The long-term jobless came in at 3.4 percent of the labor force in the third quarter. This rate dropped by 0.2 points in the quarter and 0.8 points over a year.

The youths’ employment rate surged in the quarter. The employment rate of the population aged 15-64 years rose in the quarter, standing at 65.9 percent. It was up 0.8 percentage points year-on-year. On a quarterly basis, it rose 0.5 points for persons aged 15 to 24. Permanent employment rate for people aged 15 to 64 came in at 49.4 percent, rising slightly on a quarterly basis and by 0.6 points over a year.

Meanwhile, French saw more full-time jobs in the quarter and fewer part-time jobs. Full-time employment rate stayed at 54.1 percent in the third quarter, rising 0.3 points quarterly and 0.9 points year-on-year. In the third quarter, 5.6 percent of the employed persons were underemployed.
