Chris Malone, the former head of data centers at OpenAI, has joined Nvidia as vice president of its DSX Platform, strengthening the chipmaker’s leadership team as demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to surge.
Malone began his new role at Nvidia this month, according to his LinkedIn profile. Nvidia’s DSX Platform division works with customers to design and develop AI data centers based on the company’s technical specifications and infrastructure standards.
The appointment brings an executive with extensive data center experience to Nvidia at a time when the company is expanding its role beyond supplying AI chips and into the broader infrastructure needed to support large-scale computing.
Malone left OpenAI in August amid a series of executive departures from the artificial intelligence company, which plans to pursue a public listing in 2027. He had joined OpenAI in March 2025, shortly after the ChatGPT developer announced Stargate, its major infrastructure initiative with Oracle and SoftBank.
Stargate is designed to significantly expand the computing and data center capacity available to OpenAI as the company develops increasingly powerful AI models and services.
Before his relatively brief tenure at OpenAI, Malone worked on data center infrastructure at Meta and Google, giving him experience building computing systems for some of the world’s largest technology companies.
His move also comes as Nvidia deepens its involvement in OpenAI-related infrastructure projects. In August, Nvidia agreed to provide $105 billion in credit support for a planned 10-gigawatt data center in Ohio being developed by power and data center company SB Energy on behalf of OpenAI.
OpenAI is expected to lease the massive facility and has committed to equipping it with hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Nvidia chips.
Malone’s appointment further connects Nvidia with the rapidly expanding AI data center ecosystem as technology companies race to secure computing capacity for next-generation artificial intelligence workloads.
