Fans of FromSoftware should have an easier time waiting for the release of “Elden Ring” early next year, thanks to the imminent launch of “Dark Souls: Nightfall.” The fan-made sequel promises to introduce a new story and characters, among other gameplay features.

A new teaser for the fan-made “Dark Souls: Nightfall” was released recently, along with the announcement of its release date. The fan-made sequel is currently slated to launch on Tuesday, Dec. 21, or an entire month ahead of “Elden Ring.”

The latest trailer offers a new glimpse at the playable character, the enemies, and the environment created for “Dark Souls: Nightfall.” And they are already looking like one of the best ways to revisit the world of popular action RPG.

While “Dark Souls: Nightfall” is technically a large-scale mod of the first “Dark Souls,” it has earned its place of being considered an unofficial sequel of the popular action RPG series as it promises to introduce new characters and a new map. But the developers have said that the mod uses the game’s engine and assets.

Following the release of a new trailer, lead modder Grimrukh announced that “Dark Souls: Nightfall” is only available via “Dark Souls Remastered.” “We would ant to extend the mod to PtDE as well, but there are technical limitations inherent to PtDE that make it unable to support some of the ambitious changes Nightfall is implementing,” the developer explained on YouTube.

This means fans looking to explore the new story “Dark Souls: Nightfall” will need to purchase the “Dark Souls Remastered.” The game is currently listed for $39.99 on Steam.

Grimrukh also confirmed that “Dark Souls: Nightfall” will not have online gameplay. The lead modder said the game will disable the online connection to the remastered’s online servers, so players will avoid getting banned from the official title. Modder Meowmaritus, who is credited for the mod’s combat, animation, video, and sound effects, told a fan on Twitter that the mod will be “probably” hosted on Grimrukh’s website and Nexus Mods.

“Dark Souls: Nightfall” is also promised to introduce new weapons specifically designed for the mod. Players will also be able to use a variety of weapons other than the katana.
