Raleigh, Jan. 12, 2017 -- Camp Corral, a leading nonprofit advocate for military families, announced today that registration for its 2017 summer camps is open at www.campcorral.org. Camp Corral provides a week of free summer camp for children of wounded, ill, injured or fallen military service members.
The 2017 summer camp schedule spans 19 states, including new locations at YMCA Camp Grady Spruce in Graford, Texas, and YMCA Camp Wewaw in Apopka, Florida. Camp Corral projects more than 3,600 youth between the ages of 8 and 15 will attend a camp.
“Camp Corral is excited to extend our ‘week-of-a-lifetime’ opportunities to more military children. We look forward to an exhilarating camp season, full of memorable experiences and meaningful connections for campers,” said Mary Beth Hernandez, Camp Corral CEO. “We are thankful for the contributions of our supporters and partners such as Golden Corral, Disabled American Veterans and the American Red Cross to make all of this possible.”
Camp Corral’s founding sponsor, Golden Corral, established the organization as an extension of its commitment to honoring military and veterans’ organizations. Since Camp Corral’s founding in 2011, Golden Corral has raised more than $7 million for the nonprofit.
In 2016, Camp Corral strengthened its long-standing relationship with Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and formed an official partnership that allows DAV to advance its mission of fulfilling our country’s promises to the brave men and women who have served. DAV helped an estimated 1,000 children attend a Camp Corral camp in 2016.
The American Red Cross also partnered with Camp Corral in 2016 to pilot its coping skills workshop, a program to assist military children with managing stress and developing resilience. The program will be expanded in 2017 to help even more youth better manage stressful social situations and cope with the unique challenges they face growing up in military families.
“Supporting our nations young heroes is not a task we can take on alone and it requires all Americans to stand up and join forces,” said Hernandez. “We must work together to see that they are taken care of.”
