Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will be transferred to the Papuda Penitentiary Complex in Brasília following an order issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, according to a court decision released on Thursday. The ruling marks a significant development in the high-profile case involving Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting an attempted coup against Brazil’s democratic institutions.
Until now, Bolsonaro has been held at the Federal Police Superintendency, where he has been carrying out his sentence under controlled conditions. The new decision determines that he will be relocated to a specific building within the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, one of the most well-known prison facilities in the country. The transfer reflects the Supreme Court’s assessment that continued detention at a federal police facility is no longer appropriate given the status of his conviction.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has played a central role in overseeing investigations related to anti-democratic actions in Brazil, authorized the move as part of the enforcement of Bolsonaro’s sentence. The court decision did not indicate an exact date for the transfer but confirmed that the logistics would be handled by the relevant authorities to ensure security and compliance with legal procedures.
The case against Bolsonaro stems from allegations that he was involved in efforts to undermine Brazil’s electoral process and democratic order after losing the presidential election. Following extensive investigations and legal proceedings, the Supreme Court found him guilty of conspiring to carry out a coup, resulting in one of the longest sentences ever imposed on a former Brazilian head of state.
Bolsonaro’s transfer to Papuda Prison is expected to draw significant public and political attention, both domestically and internationally. Supporters and critics alike are closely monitoring the situation, as it underscores Brazil’s judiciary taking a firm stance on accountability and the rule of law. The move also reinforces the message that no individual, regardless of political status, is above the legal system.
As the transfer proceeds, authorities have emphasized that Bolsonaro will be held in accordance with Brazilian law, with security measures in place to maintain order within the penitentiary complex.
