It has been several months since anime fans saw an episode based directly from the manga. With the “Black Clover” episode 142 official preview making references to the Spade Kingdom, does this signal the return to adaptations based on canon stories?

‘Black Clover’ episode 142: Is it based on a manga-canon story?

Aside from a very short video teaser, all that is revealed about “Black Clover” episode 142 at this point is its title -- “Those Remaining” -- and it also does not give away much. Since that does not correspond to any manga chapter title, it is a clear hint that the upcoming episode will still be anime-originals.

However, fans should not skip “Black Clover” episode 142 or any future episodes. While many refer to it as fillers, these episodes still make references to the canon story arc ahead.

The last manga-based episode was released in April where the Clover Kingdom and the Heart Kingdom forged an alliance. They identified a common enemy, a devil by the name of Megicula, who is hiding in the Spade Kingdom. Recognizing how strong the enemy is, both parties decided to have their wizards go through a six-month training period.

Technically, the events in the anime including “Black Clover” episode 142 fit that timeline. It is also important to note that this six-month period was not shown in the manga because there was a timeskip that marked the start of the Spade Kingdom arc.

‘Black Clover’ episode 142 official preview hints at more training scenes

The “Black Clover” episode 142 video teaser shows several members of the Black Bulls seemingly training hard. Noelle activates her Water Creation Magic: Valkyrie Dress at one point in the preview. Asta and Secre also appear exhausted presumably from training as well.

Noelle is one of the characters who showcased a major magic power upgrade in the manga after the timeskip. Yuno also appeared to have been promoted to Vice-Captain of Golden Dawn. Hopefully, the anime-original stories following “Black Clover” episode 142 will reveal how these milestones happened.

‘Black Clover’ episode 142 release date, where to watch

With that, it is still highly advised that fans follow the stories of the Magic Knights even in “filler” and anime-original stories like “Black Clover” episode 142. It will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and will be available through a simulcast on Crunchyroll at 6:25 p.m. PST.
