Apple Inc. is on the brink of a breakthrough agreement with OpenAI, as sources reveal plans to incorporate the latter's ChatGPT technology into the upcoming iOS 18. This move signals Apple's robust stride into artificial intelligence, promising enhanced features on its flagship iPhone device.
Apple Set to Integrate OpenAI's ChatGPT Technology into iOS 18
According to people familiar with the situation, Apple Inc. has reached an agreement with OpenAI to deploy the startup's technology on the iPhone as part of a larger push to bring artificial intelligence features to its devices.
According to persons who asked not to be named because the situation is confidential, the two parties have been finalizing terms for a deal to include ChatGPT features in Apple's iOS 18, the next iPhone operating system.
Apple has also negotiated with Alphabet Inc.'s Google about licensing the company's Gemini chatbot, as per The Business Times. Those conversations have not resulted in an agreement, but they are ongoing.
An OpenAI agreement would allow Apple to provide a popular chatbot as part of a slew of new AI features it intends to unveil next month. Bloomberg reported in April that talks with OpenAI had increased. However, there is no assurance that an agreement will be announced soon.
Representatives from Apple, OpenAI, and Google declined to comment.
Apple Prepares to Showcase AI Advancements at WWDC Amidst Talks with OpenAI
Apple intends to make a big statement in the artificial intelligence field in June when it hosts its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. Bloomberg (via The Business Standard) reports that as part of the push, the corporation would operate some of its planned artificial intelligence features in data centers equipped with its own in-house processors.
Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed he uses OpenAI's ChatGPT but noted that "a number of issues need to be sorted." He vowed that additional AI features would be added to Apple's products on a "very thoughtful basis."
On Apple's earnings conference call last week, he claimed that the company will have an advantage in artificial intelligence.
"We believe in the transformative power and promise of AI, and we believe we have advantages that will differentiate us in this new era, including Apple's unique combination of seamless hardware, software and services integration," Cook said during the earnings call.
