6 possible issues that can crash your computer

We all hate that dreaded blue screen with cryptic messages, right?

My last laptop had the habit of getting crashed at the most inappropriate times. I am sure you must have faced the same problem multiple times. Right when you are planning to hit the “Save” button, the laptop either hangs, freezes or shows the blank Blue screen. Just like that, your hours of hard work goes into the air.

If you are looking for ways to avoid this situation, you have come to the right place. In this article, I will be sharing six possible causes that can crash your computer. I will also share how you can avoid it. So let’s get started!

1. An overheated CPU or GPU :

In the case of excess heat, the CPU/GPU immediately shuts down the computer without providing any warning. This happens to avoid any damage due to overheating. The most common reason behind heat is that your cooling fan might not be working or it is clogged with dirt. Did you know, harddrives are also sensitive to temperature?

My last computer used to crash quite often. When I looked for possible reasons, I realized that my cleaning fan was completely clogged with dust. From then, I have started opening and cleaning my case periodically to avoid this problem. You should also do the same. Alternatively, you can also replace the system fan if it is making a loud buzzing noise.

Additionally, there are any programs that can monitor your laptop temperature and provide warnings in case of any danger. Installing one such program is a great way to stay away from problematic situations.

2. Software errors:

If your computer crashes only when you run a specific software, it might be the case that the software is causing it. Many times, the crash happens if you are trying to perform a specific operation in the software. Once you identify the software, look for its official website. These websites keep providing updates to make their softwares bugfree.

Additionally, this problem is quite common in softwares which are outdated or corrupted. In such cases, it is recommended to remove the software and reinstall the latest version.

3. Malware:

Malware or viruses are the most common cause of laptop crashes if you haven’t installed any antivirus program. Many of the malwares are programmed to do so. These viruses can arrive in your computer by either clicking on the wrong link or downloading a corrupt file.

While they are very common, they can cause serious harm to your import files and laptop. To avoid them from causing harm, you must install a proper antivirus program right after you buy the laptop. You can choose from hundreds of antivirus programs available on the internet. Just make sure to keep updating it whenever required. Know more about it here.

4. Errors in Hard drive:

Hard drive errors are another potential cause of computer crashes. But don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that you need to replace your hard drive. There are several factors that can result in damage/loss of partition, files or folders. Virus, human errors, badly designed software are some of the possible reasons behind hard drive error.

Sometimes, a drive error is a logical error which can easily be detected by windows. Windows in-built programs detect and mark these bad sectors so that data is not stored in those parts.

5. Outdated device drivers:

If your device drivers are outdated, they can cause crashes too. There are many cases, where simply plugging the device into the port caused the system to crash. Most of the drivers will work fine until you try to install a new OS or make a major update to the existing one. If you are facing the problem of system crash after change in the OS, here are some possible solutions:

  • Update the Printer drivers

  • Update the CD/DVD drivers

  • Update the drivers for external hard drives

Also, whenever you download the drivers, make sure to do it from the vendor’s official website.

6. Flaky memory:

Although rare, flaky memory can also result in computer crashes. Many times, you will see that RAM chips with even a “bad sport” will work fine until you run a software that specifically tries to access that memory portion. There are many programs that can help you diagnose the current problems with RAM.

Bonus tip: These issues can cause you to lose your precious data anytime, if not corrected at the right time. In order to avoid losing precious data, it is extremely crucial to take backups on the right interval. Read this article to know how to backup entire computer to external USB hard drive.
