I qualified in Medicine in 1986 at Newcastle University. I undertook Higher Specialist Training in Public Health Medicine in Oxford and Newcastle-upon Tyne. I have held Consultant positions in Health Protection in Birmingham, Glasgow and London before joining the University of Manchester in 2004. I moved to the University of Liverpool in 2011 to join the Institute of Infection and Global Health.
My research is in gastrointestinal Infection; zoonoses; food-related Infection; and food safety. I've received grants for work on emerging Infections (including zoonoses) and biological threats; fully Integrated, real-time detection, diagnosis and control of community infection outbreaks; and assessing the contribution made by the food chain to the burden of UK-acquired norovirus infection.
