After achieving an MA (Hons) in Medieval History from the University of Glasgow I undertook a postgraduate diploma in Careers Guidance (DipCG). Following a change of career into staff development and ultimately Higher Education I gained Fellowships of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD) and the Higher Education Academy (HEA). My PhD explored the role of line managers in workplace learning in voluntary organisations and was awarded by the University of Glasgow.

My main research and teaching interests are Human Resource Development and voluntary sector management, including the role of managing insider threats and people security within organisations I have published and presented papers widely on these subjects. I also have experience of teaching in HRM and retain a strong interest in HRM having recently edited a special edition of Public Management Review and being commissioned to co-edit a book on HRM in Public Service Organisations.

I am on the advisory or editorial board of a number of peer-reviewed journals and I am an external examiner for a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the UK and a member of the CIPD's national marking team for learning and development.
